Sometimes in poor network conditions it can help to enable audio-only mode. This disables streaming other people's videos, but still allows you to view screen shares and their audio.

To turn on this mode, go to the call controls in the bottom of a your screen. Then click the three dots followed by "Enable Audio-Only":
